The Forgotten Beauty of Boredom!

Modern life is busier than ever in so many ways.

We often expect ourselves to be up to date with the latest national and international news, the latest social media happenings, our friends' and family's news, trends and more.

We are expected to show up in so many ways.

Having returned from a family holiday recently, I noticed how much people on holidays allow themselves to just be, especially the older generation.

They were happy to people-watch by the pool or enjoy a coffee together without any distractions. It was interesting to note how these pockets of time where we are not entertained or are not taking in information are vital for creating a sense of inner peace.

Allowing myself the beautiful opportunity to feel bored felt like a luxury on holiday!

Without the distraction of a phone, social media or jobs to do or a schedule to follow, I noticed how peaceful it felt to not be taking in information.

We were never meant to be taking in information 24/7 and humans are not designed to be informed about events happening that are beyond our control.

How much of our time are spent worrying about wars and politics we have no control over?

How much of our precious creative energy is siphoned off into news and social media distractions?

What could we be creating if we were not being informed all day about national and international events?

Being bored allows us the chance to do something useful and/or creative with our time.

There was a time when bus journeys or travelling in general meant looking out the window and daydreaming!

There is a sense of peace that comes with this downtime for our brains.

If we always reach for our phones to entertain us in these in between moments, we rarely get the chance for our brains to rest!

Children need to feel bored regularly too so they can find creative ways to entertain themselves.

So, where can you create more moments of peace in your life? How can you go about that?

What would you prefer to be doing if you were not filling your moments of boredom with your phone or the news?

Would you be admiring your garden or doing some art or playing music? Maybe you would do some crosswords or sudoku or crochet?

Choosing to give your brain some downtime where you can relax and focus on a simple task can really help you to unwind and feel more at peace.
