Carrying the emotional load of a relationship difficulties can feel lonely and overwhelming at times.
It can feel like we have been carrying a heavy shopping bag and we can finally set it down once we engage in counselling.
There may be a feeling of relief at being heard and feeling finally able to let go of what we may have been carrying for many years.

When people come for counselling when their relationship is in difficulty, most people will discover a feeling of relief in finally being able to be open about all aspects of the relationship which they may have been struggling with for some time.
Within a close relationship, we can feel a loyalty to our partner and for this reason, there can be many things we do not feel comfortable talking about to friends and/or family.
We may not want to colour other people's view of our partner and we may feel embrassed or ashamed too about things we have tolerated for some time.
The difference in attending counselling versus sharing with people we know is that we can explore our feelings about the relationship knowing it is a confidential, safe space and that we will not be judged.
No-one is holding us to staying or leaving the relationship in the counselling room.
In addition, a counsellor or psychotherapist doesn't know your partner and will not give advice about ending or staying in the relationship.
The aim is to help you become more aware of your needs and your feelings so you feel clearer about what you want.
This process may take several sessions and there is a growing comfort in knowing you have a safe place you can bring these issues to discuss and explore.
Feeling comfortable and safe with your counsellor or psychotherapist is vital so you may need to try a few different people before finding the right fit with a therapist. Allow yourself some time too to build trust with your therapist.
