The Healing Power of Expressive Art

Writer's picture: Nicola HoggNicola Hogg

In a fast-paced world often filled with stressors, finding ways to express our feelings in an easy and accessible way is more essential than ever. Whether you choose painting, drawing, music, or any other creative outlet, artistic expression can be transformative and deeply healing for the mind, body, and soul.

By tapping into the creative side of your brain, you can unlock deep-seated emotions and express them in a non-verbal manner. If you find it difficult to articulate your feelings through words alone, creative art can help you unlock and understand yourself at a deeper level. The act of creating art helps reduce your stress hormones and being focused on an activity encourages feelings of calm mindfulness.

Clients coming to me for counselling often find it hard to find words to describe their feelings and that is where creativity can help. Try to describe how you are feeling with a colour or an image in your mind and get that out on paper.

If you want to start incorporating expressive art into your healing journey, there are several ways to start. The easiest way to start is using paints or pencils and draw how you are feeling. You are not aiming for what you draw to look like anything in particular. Getting your feelings out on the page is what is important.

Some people also like to use poetry or dance as a way to express their feelings. If you can allow yourself the freedom to dance out your feelings, take some space on your own and put some music on and let your body move and express your feelings.

Let go of any idea of how this self expression should look or feeling silly tapping into this side of yourself. The aim is to express your feelings so you feel some relief from this activity. Allow yourself to let go and embrace your creativity.
